“Mysterious Island” (1961) follows a group of Union prisoners who escape the American Civil War by commandeering a hot-air balloon, only to find themselves stranded on a remote island in the Pacific. The island, however, holds more than tropical scenery—it’s home to a bizarre array of giant creatures, strange artifacts, and unexpected discoveries. As they struggle to survive and explore their new surroundings, the castaways face both natural threats and signs of a mysterious benefactor who may be closer than they think. Set against lush landscapes and punctuated by inventive stop-motion animation from Ray Harryhausen, this British-American adventure combines science fiction and fantasy in a visually striking adaptation of Jules Verne’s classic novel.
