In the 1970 Gothic horror film The Vampire Lovers, a mysterious young woman named Carmilla arrives in Styria and becomes a guest in the homes of wealthy families. Her arrival coincides with unsettling nightmares, unexplained illnesses and deaths among young women in the region. As Carmilla forms close attachments to Laura Spielsdorf and Emma Morton, their relatives grow concerned about their declining health. General Spielsdorf seeks help from Baron Hartog, a man familiar with the area's vampire legends. Together they investigate Carmilla's identity and the history of the long-abandoned Karnstein Castle.
