After experiencing strange recurring dreams, a teenage boy and his two friends discover a way to create a powerful electromagnetic field that makes space travel possible. Using scrap parts from a junkyard, the boys build a homemade spacecraft and launch into orbit in search of alien life. Their journey leads them far beyond Earth, where they encounter unusual extraterrestrials whose understanding of humanity comes mainly from television broadcasts and movies. Directed by Joe Dante, this science fantasy adventure stars Ethan Hawke, River Phoenix and Jason Presson.
