In 17th-century France, ambitious priest Urbain Grandier becomes a political obstacle to Cardinal Richelieu's efforts to consolidate royal power. In the fortified town of Loudun, Sister Jeanne, the troubled abbess of an Ursuline convent, develops an obsession with Grandier. Her accusations of witchcraft and demonic possession soon attract church inquisitors and government officials. As public exorcisms grip the town, religious hysteria becomes entangled with a calculated campaign to remove Grandier and bring independent Loudun under centralized control.
