The movie begins as Dr. Martin (Robert Powell) arrives at a remote mental institution seeking a job. He's interviewed by Dr. Rutherford (Patrick Magee), the head of the institution, who presents him with a unique challenge. Dr. Rutherford asks Dr. Martin to interview four patients and identify which one is the former head of the institution, Dr. Starr, who had a mental breakdown and now believes he is a patient.
Dr. Martin agrees, and as he interviews each patient, their stories unfold as chilling tales of horror:
Frozen Fear: Dr. Martin speaks to Bonnie (Barbara Parkins), a young woman who recounts the story of Walter (Richard Todd), a man obsessed with cryogenics and bringing his deceased wife back to life.
The Weird Tailor: Dr. Martin interacts with Bruno (Barry Morse), a tailor who creates a suit that grants its wearer's wishes but at a deadly cost.
Lucy Comes to Stay: Barbara (Charlotte Rampling), a patient who believes she can communicate with her dead friend Lucy, narrates a story involving a supernatural presence.
Mannikins of Horror: Dr. Byron (Herbert Lom) tells a story about a paranoid doctor who becomes obsessed with miniature figures that may hold a sinister secret.
As the stories unfold, Dr. Martin becomes more entangled in the eerie atmosphere of the institution. The line between reality and delusion blurs, and he must grapple with the question of whether Dr. Starr is truly a patient or if there's a deeper mystery at play.
