Frankie Paige, a young Pittsburgh hairdresser with no religious beliefs, begins suffering unexplained wounds resembling those associated with the crucifixion of Christ. The Vatican sends Father Andrew Kiernan, a priest and investigator, to determine whether the phenomenon is genuine. As Frankie's condition becomes increasingly severe, Kiernan uncovers a connection to a deceased priest and a mysterious religious message. His investigation draws the attention of Cardinal Houseman, who has his own concerns about what Frankie may be experiencing.
