In 17th-century France, a respected Catholic priest becomes the target of political ambition, religious fanaticism and personal obsession after disturbing accusations of demonic possession emerge from a convent. As church and state exploit the growing hysteria, a series of investigations, public spectacles and power struggles place the town of Loudun at the center of a widening crisis. Based on historical events, the film blends psychological drama with historical horror.
