In the 1951 comedy “Bedtime for Bonzo,” psychology professor Peter Boyd attempts to settle a debate about heredity and environment by raising a chimpanzee as though it were a human child. With help from a young nanny, he sets out to teach the chimp—named Bonzo—basic manners and moral behavior. The unusual household soon finds itself dealing with misunderstandings, escaped pets, and skeptical onlookers as the professor works to prove that upbringing, not ancestry, shapes character.
