In medieval Italy, thief Phillipe Gaston escapes the dungeons of Aquila and falls in with former captain Etienne of Navarre and the mysterious Isabeau of Anjou. The pair are pursued by soldiers serving the Bishop of Aquila, whose obsession with Isabeau has left them burdened by a supernatural curse: she becomes a hawk by day while Navarre becomes a wolf by night. With the help of an old monk, Phillipe joins their dangerous journey back toward Aquila in search of a way to confront the Bishop.
