On isolated Petrie's Island off Ireland's coast, a farmer's boneless corpse draws mainland pathologist Dr Brian Stanley and bone-specialist Dr David West to investigate. Joined by jet-setter Toni Merrill and local physician Dr Reginald Landers, they trace the mystery to a castle laboratory where cancer research has inadvertently spawned silicon-based “silicates.” The tentacled organisms inject a bone-dissolving enzyme, divide every few hours, and soon besiege the sparsely populated island. Bullets, fire, and explosives fail, leaving villagers barricaded as the creatures multiply. Stanley and West gamble on a risky plan involving radioactive Strontium-90, hoping to exploit the monsters’ own appetite. Their only hope hinges on turning the silicates’ biology against itself before the outbreak spreads beyond the sea-bound refuge in a desperate countdown.
