"Silent Running" (1972) is an American science fiction film directed by Douglas Trumbull in his directorial debut. Set in a future where Earth's forests are extinct due to environmental neglect, the story follows Freeman Lowell, a botanist aboard the spaceship Valley Forge. Tasked with preserving the last remaining plant life in vast greenhouse domes, Lowell faces a dire moral dilemma when orders come to destroy the domes and return to commercial service. With stunning visuals and a poignant environmental message, the film explores themes of conservation and humanity's relationship with nature, underscored by Bruce Dern's compelling performance as the determined Lowell.
