San Francisco beat poet Charlie MacKenzie has a habit of ending relationships whenever commitment becomes serious. He thinks his luck has changed when he meets Harriet, an attractive butcher with an unusual past. As their romance develops, Charlie notices details that seem to connect her with a tabloid story about a mysterious woman whose husbands have disappeared. With help from his police detective friend Tony, Charlie tries to determine whether his suspicions are justified or simply another excuse to avoid settling down.
