FBI trainee Clarice Starling is assigned to help track a serial killer known as Buffalo Bill, who targets young women. Seeking insight into the killer's behavior, she interviews imprisoned psychiatrist and convicted murderer Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Lecter offers cryptic clues while demanding personal revelations from Clarice in return. As the investigation intensifies and another woman disappears, Clarice follows evidence involving the victims, unusual insects and the killer's disturbing methods. Meanwhile, Lecter's manipulation of those around him creates additional complications for the FBI and its efforts to find the missing woman.
