While camping in the Sierra Nevada, Steven Anders and his two teenage children shelter inside a cave during a strange earthquake and brilliant solar flash. Emerging afterward, they discover that most of the population has mysteriously died, leaving behind only clothing and a powdery residue. With vehicles disabled and few survivors in sight, the family begins a difficult journey toward their home in Malibu. Along the way they encounter frightened survivors, abandoned towns, dangerous animals and evidence that another solar event may be coming. Steven and his children continue south, hoping to find their missing family member and understand what has happened.
