Psychopathologist Edward Jessup experiments with sensory deprivation in hopes of exploring hidden states of human consciousness. Years later, the increasingly obsessed scientist travels to Mexico and participates in a ritual involving a powerful hallucinogenic substance. Returning with a sample, he combines the drug with isolation-tank experiments and begins experiencing startling physical effects alongside his visions. As Jessup pushes his research further, his wife Emily and colleagues Arthur Rosenberg and Mason Parrish become concerned that his experiments are producing changes that extend beyond the boundaries of his mind.
